Born out of a love affair in the 1960s between a famous English aviator and an American actress, who travelled the world together in search of a reminder of the place where they first met, Pelican Point in California. Finding their paradise, they named it Il Pellicano.
Il Pellicano is situated on the promontory of Monte Argentario, and only a few hours drive from Rome and Florence. As you enter the hotel, you can't help feeling at home: its main lounge is furnished with soft coloured sofas and armchairs, with comfy cushions and beautiful antique furniture. The attention to small details can be seen as you walk through the lounge and corridors; a small quaint alcove with a few chairs and chess -board at hand; the inviting open fireplace, reminding its guests that home is not so far away. The service is excellent yet informal, as if welcoming friends; the original owners in fact kept this as a place for welcoming their friends through the years.
The bedrooms, which vary in style, are beautifully furnished; the décor a mixture of light and subtle Mediterranean colours; some rooms in the main part offer wonderful views of the sea, while others have pretty garden views. There are several charming suites and a splendid cottage suite with its own private swimming pool.
The swimming pool, set on a fabulous terrace above the sea offers an idyllic area from which to gaze into the blue waters and at the seemingly never-ending horizon, a perfect haven for reading and having a lunch-time snack; the impressive man-made beach area can be accessed in style via the hotel lift. In the evenings, dinner can be enjoyed in the hotel's informally elegant restaurant which has an excellent à la carte menu; pre-dinner aperitifs are served on the main terrace offering splendid views of the pool area and the sea beyond.
